For centuries, women in certain temples across Maharashtra have been barred from performing rituals, a practice upheld by tradition but widely criticized as discriminatory. In a progressive ruling, the Bombay High Court has now struck down these restrictions, allowing women to participate fully in religious ceremonies.
The case was filed by women’s rights activists, who argued that temple entry laws violated fundamental rights under Articles 14 (equality) and 25 (freedom of religion). The court ruled that:
⚖️ Religious customs cannot override constitutional rights.
⚖️ Discrimination based on gender in places of worship is unconstitutional.
⚖️ Temples must ensure equal participation of women in all religious activities.
This verdict is being hailed as a major step toward gender equality in religious spaces, challenging centuries-old patriarchal norms.
