CrPC Section 180

Section 180 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), India deals with the power of police officers to seize property that appears to have been used in the commission of an offence or is suspected to be stolen.

Section 180 CrPC: Power to seize property without warrant

When a police officer reasonably suspects that any property has been stolen, unlawfully obtained, or is intended to be used for the commission of a cognizable offence, the officer may seize such property without a warrant.

The seized property must be produced before a Magistrate without unnecessary delay.

Purpose:

To allow police to act swiftly to prevent the removal, concealment, or destruction of evidence or stolen property.

To aid in the investigation and prosecution of offences by preserving crucial evidence.
