Geographical Indications Law in Bhutan
Bhutan does not yet have a dedicated national law specifically for the protection of Geographical Indications (GIs). However, the country is actively exploring the potential benefits of implementing a GI system, particularly as it prepares to join the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Bhutan is a signatory to the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, which includes provisions on GIs. This international commitment underscores Bhutan's recognition of the importance of GIs in the global IP framework .
🌱 Emerging Interest in GIs
Bhutan is increasingly aware of the potential advantages of establishing a GI system. Experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have highlighted that GIs can enhance the marketability of Bhutanese products by leveraging the country's positive global image, rich culture, and pristine environment. Such initiatives could also stimulate local entrepreneurship and tourism .
As Bhutan moves forward with its WTO accession, developing a national GI framework is seen as a strategic step to protect local products from misuse and to capitalize on the international recognition of Bhutanese goods.
