IPC Section 508

Section 508 – Act caused by inducing a person to believe that he will be rendered an object of Divine displeasure

This section deals with situations where someone induces (influences or forces) another person to do or not do something by making them believe that if they disobey, they will face divine punishment or displeasure of God.

Main Points of Section 508

Act of Inducement

If a person makes another person do something (or stop from doing something) by creating fear that not obeying will make God angry or bring divine curse, it amounts to an offence.

Nature of the Act

The act is done voluntarily by the victim, but only because of the fear of divine displeasure created in their mind by the offender.

Punishment

The punishment for this offence is simple imprisonment up to 1 year, or fine, or both.

Purpose of the Law

To protect people from being exploited in the name of religion or divine fear.

To stop misuse of religious beliefs to control or manipulate others.

Example

Suppose Ramesh tells Suresh:
“If you don’t give me your land, you will be cursed by God and suffer misfortune.”

Out of fear of divine displeasure, Suresh transfers the land.

Here, Ramesh has committed an offence under Section 508 IPC, because he forced Suresh to act by using fear of divine punishment.

In short:
Section 508 IPC punishes anyone who makes another person act (or not act) by threatening them with God’s anger or divine curse. The punishment can be imprisonment up to 1 year, or fine, or both.
