IPC Section 54

IPC Section 54: "Wrongful confinement"

Text of Section 54:

"Whoever wrongfully restrains any person in such a manner as to prevent that person from proceeding beyond certain circumscribing limits, is said 'wrongfully to confine' that person."

What does it mean?

Wrongful confinement is when a person is restrained or kept within certain limits against their will.

It means preventing someone from moving freely beyond a specific boundary.

The restraint is illegal or without lawful authority.

Key points:

The victim is not allowed to move beyond certain limits.

The confinement could be in a room, house, courtyard, or any defined space.

It doesn’t necessarily require physical force; it could be threats, barriers, or any means that unlawfully restrict freedom of movement.

Example:

If someone locks another person in a room or doesn't allow them to leave a particular area without any legal justification, it amounts to wrongful confinement.
