Motor vehicle Laws Cambodia

In Cambodia, motor vehicle regulations are designed to promote road safety and efficient traffic management. Key aspects include:

Driving License Requirements:

  • International Driving Permit (IDP): Visitors intending to drive in Cambodia must obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to their home country's driver's license, as it is legally required.

Traffic Regulations:

Driving Orientation: Vehicles in Cambodia drive on the right side of the road.

Speed Limits: Exceeding the speed limit by 40 km/h can result in fines ranging from 300,000 to 625,000 Cambodian Riels (approximately $75 to $160).

Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC): The legal BAC limit for drivers is 0.05%.

Helmet Use: Wearing helmets is mandatory for all motorcycle and scooter riders; helmets must be properly fastened and fit snugly.

Seat Belt Usage: Seat belts are mandatory for all occupants in vehicles.

Mobile Phone Use: Using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited unless utilizing a hands-free system.

Vehicle Registration and Licensing:

Registration Plates: Since April 1, 2004, Cambodia has utilized a standardized vehicle license plate format consisting of a class number, one or two Latin letters, four digits (0001 to 9999), and the province name in both Khmer and English.

Vehicle Registration: Vehicle owners are required to register their vehicles in the province where they reside. If the vehicle is sold to someone residing in a different province, the registration number usually changes.

Emission Standards:

Euro 4 Compliance: Since January 1, 2022, all new vehicles in Cambodia must comply with Euro 4 emission standards.

Euro 5 Compliance: Starting January 1, 2027, all new vehicles will be required to meet Euro 5 emission standards.

For comprehensive and current information, it's advisable to consult official Cambodian government sources or contact the nearest Cambodian embassy or consulate.
