Motor vehicle Laws Christmas Island (Australia)

Christmas Island, an Australian external territory, enforces road regulations consistent with Western Australian standards, with specific considerations due to its unique environment.

Driving License Requirements

  • Visitors: International visitors may drive with their foreign license for up to three months. If the license isn't in English, an International Drivers Permit (IDP) is required.

Road Safety Regulations

Driving Side: Vehicles operate on the left side of the road.

Seatbelts: Wearing seatbelts is mandatory for all occupants.

Helmet Use: Helmets are compulsory when riding motorbikes or bicycles.

Alcohol Consumption: Driving under the influence of alcohol is illegal. The legal Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) limit is 0.05%. Learner and provisional drivers must maintain a zero BAC.

Mobile Phones: Using mobile phones while driving is prohibited. Drivers must not hold or use a mobile phone, including for calls, text messaging, or any other purpose while operating a vehicle.

Wildlife Considerations

The island is renowned for its wildlife, notably the red crab migration. During this period, roads may be closed, and drivers should exercise caution to avoid harming crabs and other wildlife.

Vehicle Hire and Identification

Car Hire: Renting a car is advisable for exploring the island. It's recommended to pre-book due to limited availability.

Insurance and Identification: From February 1, 2024, hire cars and peer-to-peer rental vehicles with '3G Hire-and-Drive-Yourself' third-party insurance must display a new hire car registration sticker. The sticker features a red strip with the words 'HIRE CAR,' the issue year, expiry date, and registration number. Vehicles lacking this sticker cannot be used as hire cars.

Emergency Preparedness

For added safety, Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) are available for hire at no cost from the Christmas Island Police Station. These devices are designed for bushwalkers and solo adventurers, capable of being activated in emergencies requiring immediate search and rescue assistance. If you're exploring areas with no mobile phone reception, consider carrying a PLB for alerting authorities in case of a serious incident or emergency. To book or obtain one, contact the Police Station at +61 (8) 9164 8444.

Adhering to these regulations ensures a safe and enjoyable experience on Christmas Island, respecting both the law and the island's unique ecological heritage.
