⚖️ Alignment with the EU AI Act

Slovenia is in the process of implementing the EU's Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act), which came into force on August 1, 2024, with full applicability expected by 2026. The AI Act establishes a risk-based regulatory framework for AI systems, categorizing them into prohibited, high-risk, and limited-risk categories, each with corresponding obligations.

To align with the AI Act, Slovenia has:

Drafted a national act to transpose the AI Act into Slovenian law, with public consultation held in early 2025.

Designated the Ministry of Digital Transformation as the primary authority for implementing the AI Act.

Established an expert council to advise on the implementation process.(AI Watch, Artificial Intelligence Act)

The country is also preparing to set up an AI regulatory sandbox by 2026 to facilitate the safe testing and development of AI technologies. (Artificial Intelligence Act)

🏛️ Public Sector AI Integration

Slovenia's AI strategy includes specific actions for integrating AI into public administration:

Introducing AI solutions to improve public sector services.

Providing training programs to enhance AI competencies among public servants.

Establishing a Digital Innovation Hub to support AI development and deployment.

Ensuring open access to public sector data to promote transparency and innovation.

Launching awareness campaigns to educate citizens about AI opportunities and risks.(AI Watch)

These initiatives aim to position the public sector as a leader in responsible AI adoption. (AI Watch)

🌍 International Collaboration

Slovenia is committed to international cooperation in AI governance:

Hosting the International Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (IRCAI) under the auspices of UNESCO, focusing on AI's role in sustainable development.

Participating in the EU's AI Action Plan for the Continent, which includes the Slovenian AI Factory (SLAIF) as part of the European AI Factories network. (OECD.AI, sling.si)

📅 Upcoming Developments

Slovenia is on track to implement the AI Act by August 2025, with the establishment of national authorities and regulatory frameworks in progress. The AI regulatory sandbox is expected to be operational by 2026, facilitating innovation and compliance testing. (Artificial Intelligence Act)

In summary, Slovenia is proactively developing a robust AI governance framework through national strategies and alignment with EU regulations, aiming to foster innovation while ensuring ethical and responsible AI deployment.
