Supreme Court Bangladesh
The Supreme Court of Bangladesh is the highest judicial authority in the country, overseeing the administration of justice through its two divisions:
High Court Division: Handles appeals from lower courts and tribunals, exercises original jurisdiction in certain matters, and safeguards fundamental rights.
Appellate Division: Serves as the final court of appeal, reviewing decisions from the High Court Division and other lower courts.
Composition and Appointment of Judges:
High Court Division: As of August 2024, consists of 78 judges (76 permanent and 2 additional). Judges are appointed by the President of Bangladesh, following recommendations from the Chief Justice and consultations with the Prime Minister.
Appellate Division: Comprises 6 justices, including the Chief Justice. Appointments are made by the President, based on recommendations from the Chief Justice and consultations with the Prime Minister.
Recent Developments:
Leadership Changes: In August 2024, Syed Refaat Ahmed was appointed Chief Justice, succeeding Obaidul Hassan.
Judicial Appointments: In December 2022, three new justices were appointed to the Appellate Division, enhancing the court's capacity to handle cases efficiently.
Language of Proceedings:
While Bengali is the official language of Bangladesh, Supreme Court judgments are traditionally delivered in English, a practice rooted in colonial heritage. This has sparked discussions about promoting Bengali usage in legal proceedings to enhance accessibility for the general populace.
