Medico Legal at Moldova
Moldova has implemented significant reforms to enhance its medico-legal system, focusing on improving services for survivors of violence and strengthening forensic capabilities.
Renovation of Forensic Examination Facilities:
Forensic Medicine Center in Chișinău: In July 2023, with support from UNFPA Moldova, the medico-legal examination unit at this center was renovated and equipped with modern medical facilities. The upgrades include a dedicated examination room, a counseling area for survivors, and spaces for discussions with psychologists and law enforcement, all designed to meet international standards and ensure victim confidentiality.
Capacity Building and Equipment Enhancement:
Mobile Forensic Laboratories: In December 2017, the General Police Inspectorate received seven mobile forensic laboratories equipped with advanced crime scene investigation kits. These mobile units enhance the capacity of territorial police inspectorates to conduct timely and efficient investigations, especially in remote areas.
Technical and Criminalistic Expertise Center: Supported by the European Union, Moldova's Technical, Criminalistic, and Legal Expertise Center was equipped with high-tech equipment, including fingerprint analysis tools and physical-chemical laboratories. These enhancements improve the accuracy and efficiency of forensic examinations.
Educational and Professional Development:
Department of Forensic Medicine: The "Nicolae Testemițanu" State University of Medicine and Pharmacy hosts a dedicated Department of Forensic Medicine, contributing to the education and training of professionals in this field.
International Symposiums: In May 2024, the university organized the tenth edition of the international symposium on domestic and gender-based violence. The event brought together over 50 forensic physicians and researchers from Moldova and abroad to discuss current challenges and share knowledge in the field.
These initiatives demonstrate Moldova's commitment to enhancing its medico-legal infrastructure, ensuring that forensic services meet international standards, and improving support systems for survivors of violence.
