Medico Legal at Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone has established a comprehensive medico-legal system through the Medical Examiners Act, 2021, which replaced the outdated Coroners Act of 1907. This modern legislation aims to enhance the investigation of deaths, particularly those that are violent, suspicious, or occur under unusual circumstances.
🏛️ Establishment of the Office of the Medical Examiner
The Act created the Office of the Medical Examiner, led by a Chief Medical Examiner appointed by the President with parliamentary approval. The Chief Medical Examiner must be a qualified physician with experience in forensic pathology. Supporting roles include a Deputy Chief Medical Examiner and regional offices across Sierra Leone, each headed by a Medical Examiner
⚰️ Reportable Deaths and Investigations
The Act defines "reportable deaths" as those that are violent, unnatural, suspicious, or occur in custody or healthcare settings. Upon such a death, the Chief Medical Examiner is responsible for conducting investigations, which may include post-mortem examinations, to determine the cause and manner of death. These investigations aim to support public health, safety, and justice
🧪 Functions and Powers
The Chief Medical Examiner has the authority t:

🛡️ Legal Protections and Confidentialit
The Act ensures that individuals reporting deaths in good faith are protected from legal liabiliy. It also establishes confidentiality for certain records, including medical and law enforcement documents related to the investigation, to safeguard privacy and the integrity of the investigatin.
🏥 Implementation and Challengs
